There is something just so whimsical and romantic about barns that makes them the most wonderful wedding venue, isn’t there?

From the exposed stone walls to the ancient beams and vaulted ceilings, they really do provide the most gorgeously natural setting for a wedding ceremony or reception.

Often barn venues are set in a large farm or on an estate, meaning they also come with beautiful outdoor spaces and heaps of rural charm, not to mention great accommodation, too.

1. The Oak Barn

Location: The Oak Barn, Hittisleigh Barton, Exeter, Devon EX6 6LF

The Oak Barn, is a stunning wedding venue nestled in Hittisleigh Barton, a small historic hamlet around St Andrews Church, in the heart of rural Devon, near Exeter. Owners Katherine and John have lived at the farm since 2000, and it’s very much a family affair.

The Oak Barn is actually 2 barns, one is an 18th-century granary converted to a stunning hall with traditional oak trusses, the other is a 19th-century barn converted into a reception room, kitchen and accommodation. The conversion of the barns was done to the highest standard, using traditional building methods and oak from the farm.

This is a DIY venue and so you are free to choose the suppliers of your choice (including the bar 😉) There is also self-catering accommodation for you and your guests to enjoy, including a room that has disabled facilities.

Weddings at Hittisleigh Barton are relaxed, informal family celebrations. Up to 90 people can be comfortably seated, with room for 125 people in the evening. You can book a civil ceremony at the oak barn or you could have your ceremony at St Andrews medieval church.

2. Westcott Barton

Location: Westcott Barton, Middle Marwood, Barnstaple, North Devon, EX31 4EF

As you approach down the valley into Westcott Barton there is a sense of stepping out of one world into another which is less complicated, more tranquil and altogether more suited to a time spent relaxing and enjoying a break. With its own gardens, stream, lake and woods, although only 7 miles from north of Barnstaple, and a short drive from many of Britain's best beaches, it is wonderfully remote.

Westcott Barton is a wonderfully private venue for weddings and other events, offering great flexibility and accommodation on-site for over 25 guests. It is licenced for civil ceremonies, with a variety of choices of ceremony locations, the barn or the orangery to name a couple, so the ceremony and reception can be held at one venue as a wedding celebration.

3. Ashridge Great Barn

Location: Ashridge Court, North Tawton, EX20 2DH

The setting of the Great Barn is a working cattle farm, in the heart of the Devonshire countryside. Lovingly restored, The Great Barn is a rustic wedding venue with a difference. With exclusive access for 3 full days, you are free to personalise your day to your taste and involve the suppliers of your choice.

The venue boasts 3 licensed ceremony spaces and can accommodate 140 seated guest, increasing to 200 evening guests.

Your experience at Ashridge Court includes friendly, professional staff to help plan your wedding, on the day coordination, access to props and equipment including crockery and special touches such as a fire pit and wood supply.

4. Old Barn Wedding

Location: Higher Clovelly, North Devon, Bideford EX39 5RY

The Old Barn, a unique family-owned DIY wedding venue in North Devon, is a gorgeous 17th-century oak-beamed building that has been converted into a wedding venue that can comfortably accommodate 118 people for the ceremony and up to 200 for the reception.

Attached to the barn is a beautiful conservatory which for much of the year is covered in wisteria and grapevines, with views over the garden this is the perfect setting for civil ceremonies for up to 118 people. The garden has space for a tepee or small marque.

This venue offers you the perfect setting for couples that want a totally unique day- with a surprise after-party and you are free to tie the knot in the historic barn itself or even have a funfair wedding and get hitched on the dodgems, as there is the option to enter the adjoining adventure park and then in the evening you and your guests can have exclusive use of the dodgems; great fun and makes amazing memories.

5. Rock Farm

Location: Rock Farm, Alphington, Devon, EX11 1NZ

Rock Farm is designed specifically with intimate weddings in mind. The rural location surrounded by farmland, along with the untouched, natural feel of the property created that magical feel for your special day or weekend, and oozes soul, romance and character.

This venue is specifically designed for wedding ceremonies and celebrations of up to 45 people with 60 guests for the evening, meaning you can have that intimate and meaningful celebration you have always wished for in a venue that is atmospheric and historic.

6. The Barn at South Milton

Location: Cross Parks, South Milton, Kingsbridge TQ7 3JX

The Barn at South Milton in South Devon is a beautiful and unique wedding reception venue.

With its rustic charm and superbly elevated position, it truly is the perfect setting for your very special day. It has panoramic views over the rolling Devon countryside and down to the sea & coastline beyond.

The venue has two great barn areas, the larger barn can comfortably accommodate up to 150 seated guests for your wedding breakfast, and in addition to this, there is have a separate, adjoining reception barn, which provides a perfect space for ‘tiny weddings’ of between 15 and 30 guests. There is also accommodation, with a newly refurbished cottage and glamping/camping options.

7. The Corn Barn

Location: Sutton Barton, Cullompton EX15 1NF

Nestled deep in the glorious countryside near Cullompton, The Corn Barn, a restored 18th-century barn wedding venue, is situated on a working farm. The barns that make up the venue adjoin a south-facing courtyard and feature high vaulted ceilings, hefty oak beams, natural cob walls and exposed stonework.

The venue is great for events in all seasons, as while the courtyard makes a wonderful summer sun-trap, the barns also have underfloor heating and wood-burning stoves.

8. The Barn at Barons Hill

Location: Barons Hill Farm, Avonwick, South Devon, TQ10 9EZ

This wonderful Barn is situated within the idyllic, ancient 60 acre Barons Hill farm, and can accommodate up to 120 seated guests.

Beautifully restored, this agricultural barn is in keeping with its original rustic use, featuring high ceilings and panelled walls. It also has a large private courtyard with views over the farm and beautiful countryside beyond.

Ash Barton Estate

Last but by no means least we have The Ash Barton Estate, situated in the wonderful North Devon countryside. Ash Barton is a super flexible DIY venue that gives couples the opportunity to have the wedding they’ve always wanted.

Boasting many ceremony locations including the house, courtyard, old chapel and barn, this is a venue for those who really want to customise their big day and make it their own.

The estate sleeps over 35 guests, has a reception capacity of 200 guests and has many great facilities such as an indoor pool and games barn…. What’s more, it's over a mile from the nearest neighbour!
